On the southern part of the castle hill stands the former royal castle. During the struggle against the Turks most of this famous medieval palace perished. In the 19th century on the orders of Maria Theresa an imposing baroque palace was built, still visible today. During World War II, the palace was burned down completely, but is now restored to its former glory again. Inside there is not only the elegant residential area of the former kings to be found, but museums also – like the Hungarian National Gallery and the Ludwig Collection.
